T​hank you for your interest in Southeast Texas Search and Rescue (SATSAR). At SETSAR, we know that a search and rescue organization is only as good as its people, and we are always looking for like-minded individuals that want to make a difference. If you are the type of person that likes helping people and wants to learn valuable life-saving skills, make new friends, and be a part of something bigger than yourself, then come join us. Membership is open to Texas residents 18 years of age and older who meet the membership requirements.

Below are some of the most commonly asked questions that potential new members have before requesting an application for membership.

Do I need to have previous experience?

Answer:  No previous experience in search and rescue (SAR) is required. SETSAR provides its members online and in-person training at no cost. Some of the online training programs are through FEMA and other governmental agencies.

What does it cost to become a member?

Answer: Currently there is no membership fee; however, members are responsible for their own gear. Gear cost can vary; most members spend $175 to $340. However, most of the gear you likely already have or can buy over time.

There are additional costs when responding to an event, like gas, meals, and overnight lodging for extended deployment. However, SETSAR is currently working on sponsorships that will help or eliminate additional costs members may incur during deployment, such as transportation fees, food expenses, and accommodation costs.

Is there a physical fitness test?

Answer: Yes. Ground search and specialized teams are required to complete a fitness test every six months. The test is not difficult; ground search members must be able to walk 1 mile in 20 minutes carrying 5 pounds of gear. Specialized teams must be able to walk 2 miles in 40 minutes carrying 20 pounds of gear. 

Positions like drone operations, communications, public relations, logistics, and ground support currently do not require members to take a fitness test; however, all members need to be in good health.

Are there other positions besides ground operations available for members?

Answer: Yes. Drone operations, incident command, communication, logistics support are available for those individuals who do not want to enter the woods looking for a lost child, rescuing an individual stuck on a cliff, or searching for victims after a tornado or hurricane.

How much time do I need to commit to be a member?

Answer: We expect all team members to attend a minimum of five non-deployment meetings and/or training exercises. There is currently no minimum requirement for callouts, and we understand that, depending on the day, time, and location, you may not be able to participate. However, we hope that all team members will be able to respond when our services are requested.

How long does the process take?

Answer: After we receive your new member application, you'll be invited to attend one of our meetings. Currently these meetings are held every other month, where you'll have the opportunity to meet other team members and senior staff and fully decide if SETSAR is right for you.
